03/01/2012 Dreams Hilda Doolittle said, You dont even know what a dream is; how did it come? It didnt come, it was there (1886-1961, â€Å"Dreamsâ€Å".) Any sequence of images, thoughts or feelings going through the mind while sleeping, is called a dream, however; dreams do not only occur during sleep. Some of the best dreams will occur in the middle of the day, while youre wide awake. A simple thought that crosses your mind, or in conversations with others you may find a future dream. According to Eastons 1897 Bible Dictionary, God has even frequently made use of dreams in communicating his will to men (Gen 28:12; 31:10; 31:24; 37:9-11; Judg 7; 1King 3:5.) Pipe-dream is a slang word originally used to reference smoking opium and having fantastic hallucinations, according to The Chica go Daily Tribune (Dec 11, 1890.) These infatuated people may be seen laughing and talking wildly under the effects of the first pipe, is what Robert Fortune says in his Three Years Wanderings in Northern Provinces of China (1847.) Pipe-dream or not, it is these daydreams that get most of us through a boring or stressful day at work. As I was doing research for this paper, I was taken aback by the fact that in the early 1900s the word dream was not used in literature. It was replaced with maeting swefn which apparently means sleeping vision in Old English (1931). There was no â€Å"dream† with this sense in Old English. Instead, in Old English dream meant â€Å"joy, mirth, and also music.† I dont understand why a word as powerful as dream wouldnt be used in literature. Dreams are what life is made of. Our subconscious minds are always busy dreaming, while we sleep, work, and play.
